In 1890, Joseph Opinel is 18 years old and works in the family cutting workshop. He is passionate about new machines and techniques, so he builds his own camera and quickly becomes the go-to wedding and event photographer in his country. His passion for machines and manufacturing processes make him want to invent an object that he wishes to manufacture with modern techniques. Against the advice of his father, who loved crafts and distrusted machines, he spends his free time refining the shape and making a small pocket knife: thus the Opinel was born!
