Briko was founded in 1985 by Alberto Brignone, head of materials for the Italian ski team, to produce waxes that meet their needs; at first these are not sold, but used only in competitions. In 1988, thanks to a new and revolutionary graphite-algoflon compound, the "black" Briko wax allowed the three Italians Michael Mair, Giorgio Piantanida and Werner Perathoner to conquer the entire podium in the Leukerbad downhill.

In 1988 Brigone resigned from his federal post, deciding to take care of the company; this diversifies its production, also starting to produce eyewear, helmets and ski clothing. The spread of the brand was aided by several athletes, including Alberto Tomba, Bjørn Dæhlie and Marco Pantani. In cycling, moreover, Briko has had partnerships with the teams of Mercatone Uno and with Fassa Bortolo and, from 2005 to 2007, Liquigas.

In 1989 the new Thrama lenses are introduced; these are based on the concept of transmittance, that is on selective light filtration techniques aimed at drastically reducing the visual "noise" (diffused light); they also guarantee protection from UV rays. In the following years, several technological innovations were introduced, including Zygo technology goggles and tri-composite fiber helmets.The company also expanded into other sports, including freeride, snowboarding and canoeing.
