In 1975, during a trip to Europe, Tim Leatherman and his wife, Chau, encountered a variety of situations, from leaking plumbing in hotels to repairing their battered Fiat on the road. Tim realized he needed a pliers-based multitool. “I carried a pocketknife and used it for everything from cutting bread to fixing my car. I wish I'd had pliers with me!”

When Tim returned to the United States, he fleshed out the “multitool” idea he'd outlined during the trip and got to work.
