Socks
A trekking or trail sock (or hiking sock) is a technical garment specifically designed to protect the foot during long hikes over uneven terrain and in various weather conditions. Unlike everyday socks, their primary purpose is to minimize friction, cushion against impact, wick away moisture, and regulate foot temperature to prevent blisters and chafing.
To choose the perfect technical mountain socks, you should consider three key factors: material, cushioning (thickness), and height. A good sock prevents friction, manages moisture, and helps avoid those dreaded blisters.
1. Material (The key to preventing blisters)
• Merino Wool: The gold-standard material. It provides natural thermoregulation (insulating against the cold while remaining breathable in the summer), is soft to the touch, and resists odors—even after several days of continuous wear.
• Synthetic fibers (Polyester, Polyamide, Nylon): These offer high breathability, ultra-fast drying, and resistance to mechanical wear and tear.
• Elastane (Lycra): Essential in small percentages (2–5%) to ensure the sock fits like a second skin, staying firmly in place without shifting or bunching up.
2. Thickness and Cushioning
• Ultralight / Thin: Designed for trail running or hiking in extremely hot climates. These prioritize maximum ventilation.
• Medium (Medium Cushion): The most versatile choice for trekking and multi-day hikes. They feature padded reinforcements in the heel, toe, and sole to absorb impact.
• Thick (Heavy/Full Cushion): Ideal for mountaineering, winter alpine activities, or treks requiring rigid boots. These provide maximum thermal insulation and protection.
3. Sock Height
• Low-cut (Ankle/Invisible): For use only with low-profile trail running shoes.
• Mid-cut (Crew): The classic mountain sock height. It extends a few centimeters above the ankle. This is essential when wearing mid- or high-cut boots, as it prevents the boot collar from rubbing directly against the skin.
• High-cut (Over-the-calf): Reaches up to the knee; designed for ski mountaineering or technical winter mountaineering.
