The name Salewa originally comes from Sattler Leder Waren (Saddlery and Leather Goods, in German). Founded in Munich in 1935, the company shifted its focus to mountaineering in the 1950s, quickly becoming known for creating the first backpack for Andean expeditions and its famous lightweight, adjustable crampons. Since 1990, it has been part of the Oberalp Group, with its headquarters in Bolzano, Italy, at the foot of the Dolomites.
