Poncho
Poncho
A mountain cape (also known as a rain cape or poncho) is a long, loose-fitting, waterproof garment designed to provide full-body protection for mountaineers against rain or snow.
When choosing the right mountain cape (or waterproof poncho), you should aim for the perfect balance between waterproofing, breathability, and weight. Unlike a technical jacket, a cape offers excellent ventilation from below and has the added benefit of covering your backpack.
1. Capacity and Size (The Backpack Factor)
• Poncho with a "hump": Choose a model that features an elasticated or expandable back section designed to accommodate a backpack (typically 40 to 70 liters). If you opt for a standard, flat-backed poncho, it will end up being too short at the back once you put on your pack.
• Correct length: It should reach at least your knees to protect your thighs while walking, but it shouldn't be so long that you risk tripping over it on steep ascents.
2. Materials and Waterproofing
• Plastic/PVC: These are the most affordable and 100% waterproof, but they offer zero breathability (creating a "sauna effect") and tear easily if snagged on branches. They are suitable only for emergencies.
• Nylon or Polyester with a coating (PU or silicone): These offer the best value for money. They are highly tear-resistant (look for "ripstop" fabric) and can withstand heavy storms.
• Technical membranes (such as Gore-Tex or similar): These are the most expensive option, but they are both waterproof and breathable—ideal if you plan to hike for long hours in the rain.
3. Design Details That Make a Difference
• Corner eyelets: These allow you to stretch out the cape and use it as an emergency tarp to improvise a shelter.
• Adjustable hood: It is essential that the hood includes a stiffened brim and drawstrings, ensuring it stays in place during windy conditions and doesn't slip down to cover your eyes.
• Sleeves or side closures: Some models feature full sleeves, while others use snap buttons along the sides. Sleeves provide better protection for the arms, though they offer slightly less ventilation.
